WIC Programs throughout Virginia offer the following core breastfeeding services listed below. Breastfeeding Peer Counselors assist moms to achieve their breastfeeding goal by providing basic information, support, services, and referrals needed to help them make educated choices about infant feeding.<\/p>\n

Individual and Family Breastfeeding Counseling<\/h2>\n

Counseling is offered to WIC participants before and after the delivery of their infants. Counseling settings are offered at clinics, home, hospital and \/or by phone depending on your local program’s services. Dads<\/a> and other supportive persons are welcome to attend these counseling sessions.<\/p>\n

Group Education<\/h2>\n

Group education for pregnant and breastfeeding moms is scheduled between individual sessions to provide additional education and support. Dads<\/a> and other supportive persons are welcome to attend these counseling sessions.<\/p>\n

Language Support<\/h2>\n

Breastfeeding staff have access to Language Interpretation Services which provides worldwide language support.<\/p>\n

Pump Loan Program<\/h2>\n

Breast pumps are recommended for establishing or maintaining milk supply when resolving latch issues, for medical reasons, and for when a mom is separated from her infant to return to work or school (English) or (Spanish). A pump demonstration, education, and supplies can be provided based on need.<\/p>\n

Support<\/h2>\n

Breastfeeding staff link participants to other services outside of your local health department to meet needs, to improve health, and to utilize the resources available in the community.<\/p>\n
