Copies of certificates can be obtained for and are available to immediate family members only \u2013 mother, father, husband, wife, child, brother, sister and grandparents with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/vital-records\/id-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">valid ID<\/a>. Birth records can be issued to the legal guardian with proof of custody papers. Aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, etc. cannot obtain a vital record.<\/p>\n<p>Additional options for obtaining vital records are available from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/vital-records\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Division of Vital Records<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.virginia.gov\/records\/vital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Motor Vehicles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Copies of marriage licenses can also be obtained from local county or city clerk&#8217;s offices.<\/p>\n<h2>Death Certificates<\/h2>\n<p>Death certificates can be filed at and certified copies obtained from any local department in the State of Virginia, regardless of where the death occurred. However, if it has been less than 30 days since the filing of death, then the death certificate must be obtained from the city or county in which the death was originally filed.
