We have also observed dramatic increases in the incidence of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/Congenital-Syphilis-VA-STI-Report-2024-Accessible.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">congenital syphilis<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a preventable diagnosis with potentially severe consequences for infected infants.\u00a0 <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Clinicians and allied health professionals represent our first line of defense in detecting syphilis. Patients who are allergic to penicillin must be desensitized and treated with benzathine penicillin G. Providers who don\u2019t have access to benzathine penicillin G due to the national shortage should contact their health department to coordinate care.
