We encourage parents whose newborn has been identified with sickle cell disease or trait to be tested. To see if you qualify for free screening, please contact your local health department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bold\"><strong>Counseling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anyone who has had sickle cell screening or whose newborn has been identified with a hemoglobinopathy should receive a copy of his or her test results and offered educational genetic counseling. This process involves the clear communication of all the medical, psychological, social, and genetic factors related to the specific trait being discussed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bold\"><strong>Newborn Screening<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Virginia, all babies are screened for sickle cell disease. All infants identified with test results indicating sickle cell disease or other genetically related hemoglobinopathies are followed to ensure confirmatory testing is done and that all confirmed cases are in medical care. Enrollment in medical care is highly encouraged to ensure:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list\">\n<li>Identification and confirmation of disease status prior to onset of clinical symptoms<\/li>\n<li>Enrollment of families into a comprehensive care plan that includes parent education and support<\/li>\n<li>Early administration of prophylactic penicillin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To obtain a copy of your baby's newborn screening results, contact your baby's doctor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional Services <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All newborns identified with having sickle cell disease or other genetically related hemoglobinopathies will be referred to a Care Connection for Children center. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/2016\/12\/Map_CCC.pdf\">Locate the closest center in your area.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>There are nine Sickle Cell Chapters of Virginia that provide resources to individuals and families impacted by sickle cell disease by addressing unmet educational, social and psychosocial needs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2016\/12\/Statewide-Sickle-Cell-Chapters.docx\">Find the closest chapter near you<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-27-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-27-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-27-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-video panel-first-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-video so-widget-sow-video-default-c08170c47cfb-27\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Medical Transition for Youth with Special Needs or Disabilities:<\/h3>\n<div class=\"sow-video-wrapper\n\">\n\t\t\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What is Health Care Transition?
