The rabies virus (RABV) is only present in the saliva and nervous system tissue of infected animals, and is spread through direct contact with an infected animal\u2019s saliva or central nervous system tissue, most often through bites and scratches from the infected animal. Wild animals that have exposed a person or pet must be euthanized and tested for rabies; if the animal is not available for testing, it must be considered rabid.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Report any potential exposure to the appropriate animal control service:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Prince William County residents may make reports with the Prince William County Police Department\u2019s Animal Control Bureau at <strong>703-792-6500<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Manassas City residents may make reports with the Manassas City Police Department at <strong>703-257-8009<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Manassas Park residents may make reports with the Manassas Park Animal Control Division at <strong>703-361-1136<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you are bitten or exposed to a potentially rabid animal, please do not attempt to contain the animal yourself. Instead, please contact the appropriate animal control service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you have questions or concerns please contact us a<\/span>t <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"mailto:PWHDRabies@vdh.virginia.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PWHDRabies@vdh.virginia.gov<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-12633-0-0-5\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"5\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<div id=\"panel-13980-0-0-5\" data-index=\"5\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>What is Considered Exposure?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Virginia Department of Health defines a rabies exposure as \u201cany circumstance where wet saliva or [central nervous system] tissue from a rabid or suspected rabid animal did have, or may have had, direct contact with mucous membranes or a break in the skin of a domestic animal.\u201d Since the rabies vaccine is not 100% effective, all mammals, including pets, can potentially carry the rabies virus (RABV).<\/p>\n<p>The rabies virus can be transmitted through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/hcp\/clinical-overview\/index.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bite or non-bite exposure<\/span><\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bite exposure<\/strong>: breaking of the skin by teeth of an animal<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-bite exposur<\/strong>e: contamination of open wounds, abrasions, mucous membranes (eyes, mouth, nose), or scratches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"panel-13980-0-0-7\" data-index=\"7\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>What Happens if My Pet Bites a Human?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>All animal bites involving humans must be reported to the Animal Control Services in your jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p>At the discretion of the local health director, any animal that may have exposed a person shall be confined under <strong>observation for 10<\/strong> <strong>days <\/strong>at the expense of the owner or custodian. An animal that is confined should be kept in a building, pen, or some other escape-proof enclosure. The animal cannot be removed from the property unless on a leash and under the control of a responsible adult.<\/p>\n<p>Once the animal has completed its observation, the owner must verify the health of the animal by calling the rabies line at <strong>(703) 792-5363 <\/strong>or by emailing <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"mailto:PWHDRabies@vdh.virginia.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PWHDRabies@vdh.virginia.gov<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"panel-13980-0-0-6\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-headline\" data-index=\"6\">\n<div class=\"so-widget-sow-headline so-widget-sow-headline-default-8652db6ed616-12633\">\n<div class=\"sow-headline-container \">\n<h2 class=\"sow-headline\"><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"sow-headline\">Rabies in Animals<\/h2>\n<p class=\"sow-headline\"><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Only mammals can contract rabies. Approximately <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/about\/index.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">90%<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0of all confirmed rabies cases found in the United States are from wildlife. Wild animals that are at a high risk of carrying the rabies virus includes\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">raccoons<\/span><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">skunks<\/span><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">foxes<\/span><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">, and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">bats<\/span><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"sow-headline\">Rabies can also be contracted by domestic animals such as cats and dogs, and livestock such as cattle, horses, and goats.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sow-headline\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/about\/index.html\">Bats<\/a> <\/span><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">are the leading cause of exposure to rabies in the US. If you find a bat in your home, it is highly recommended that you file a report with Animal Control Services because their bites are often small and not visible to the human eye.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"sow-headline\"><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians <strong>cannot<\/strong> contract or transmit rabies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Signs an Animal May be Rabid<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Only a lab test can confirm the presence of the rabies virus. However, animals that may be rabid may display\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/hcp\/animals\/information-for-veterinarians.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/animals\/index.html\">behaviors<\/a><\/span><a class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-underline text-strikethrough-none\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/animals\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">:<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Excessive drooling (saliva)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Animal behaving aggressively<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Animal that is tamer than usual<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Animal having trouble moving as expected<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Animal biting at imaginary objects<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"OYPEnA text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">A bat on the ground<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you believe an animal may be rabid, safely leave the area and contact the local animal control services.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-12633-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-12633-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-12633-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child\" data-index=\"6\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-12633-1-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h2>Prevent Exposure<\/h2>\n<p>You can protect the health of your family and pets by practicing safe behaviors:<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2023\/12\/Person-walking-a-dog.png\" alt=\"= Person walking a dog\" width=\"230\" height=\"193\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 230px; This may include <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/hcp\/prevention-recommendations\/post-exposure-prophylaxis.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/medical_care\/index.html\">rabies post exposure prophylaxis (PEP)<\/a><\/span>, which is given on day 0, which may or may not be the day of exposure, then on days 3, 7, and 14. Dogs and cats without a current rabies vaccination who are potentially exposed to the rabies virus are subject to six months of strict confinement\/isolation or euthanasia. For those pets with current rabies vaccine, this observation period is far less strict, and only 45 days in length. In the event of a rabies exposure, you will be evaluated to receive the rabies booster.<\/p>\n<p>If you or a staff member have been exposed to an animal or you suspect an animal may have been exposed to rabies, please report the incident to the appropriate animal control service.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-12633-1-0-4\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-accordion
