The risk of measles remains low for most of the United States due to high immunization coverage and rapid case identification and response efforts. Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination is the best way to protect against measles and its complications.<\/p>\n<p>Measles was <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/about\/history.html#elimination\">declared eliminated in the United States in 2000<\/a>. This was thanks to a very high percentage of people receiving the safe and effective measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. In recent years, however:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"nested-list\">\n<li class=\"level-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/wr\/mm7341a3.htm\">U.S. MMR coverage among kindergarteners<\/a>\u00a0is now below the 95% coverage target\u2014much lower in some communities\u2014and is decreasing.<\/li>\n<li class=\"level-1\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/globalhealth\/measles\/index.html\">Global measles activity<\/a>\u00a0is increasing, meaning more chances of an unvaccinated person infected with measles abroad returning to the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-2414-0-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Measles Cases in Virginia<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>VDH has reported multiple cases of measles in Virginia in 2026. Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/measles\/#2025-exposures\">Measles in Virginia: 2026<\/a>\u00a0for updates on cases and potential exposure sites in Virginia.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">If you think you may have been exposed to measles, watch for symptoms for <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">21 days after the date of your potential exposure<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. The virus is released when an infected person breathes or coughs.
