Most people who develop Crohn&#8217;s disease are diagnosed before they&#8217;re 30 years old.<\/li>\n<li>Ethnicity: IBD can affect any ethnic group, whites and people of Eastern European Jewish descent have the highest risk.<\/li>\n<li>Family history: You&#8217;re at higher risk if you have a close relative, such as a parent, sibling or child, with the disease.<\/li>\n<li>Cigarette smoking: Cigarette smoking is a preventable risk factor for developing IBD.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"nextsteps\">\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Crohn\u2019s Disease<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>Ulcerative Colitis<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\u2022Inflammation may develop anywhere in the GI tract from the mouth of the anus<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Occurs commonly at the end of the small intestine<\/p>\n<p>\u2022May appear in patches<\/p>\n<p>\u2022May extend through entire thickness of bowel wall<\/p>\n<p>\u2022About 67% of people in remission will have a least 1 relapse over the next 5 years<\/td>\n<td>\u2022Limited to the colon and rectum<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Occurs in the rectum and colon, involving a part of the entire colon<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Appears in continuous pattern<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Inflammation occurs innermost lining of the intestine<\/p>\n<p>\u2022About 30% of people in remission will experience a relapse in the next year<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Signs and Symptoms<\/h4>\n<h5>Symptoms related to inflammation of the GI tract:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Persistent Diarrhea<\/li>\n<li>Rectal bleeding<\/li>\n<li>Urgent need to move bowels<\/li>\n<li>Abdominal cramps and pain<\/li>\n<li>Sensation of incomplete evacuation<\/li>\n<li>Constipation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>General symptoms that may also be associated with IBD:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<li>Loss of appetite<\/li>\n<li>Weight Loss<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Night sweats<\/li>\n<li>Loss of normal menstrual cycle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>IBD and Colorectal Cancer<\/h4>\n<p>Crohn\u2019s and Colitis are risk factors for developing colorectal cancer (CRC).
