Almost half of these children are in care for up to 12 hours a day.\u00b9 15 percent of these children live in poverty. Improving Early Care and Education (ECE) environments helps children develop lifelong healthy habits.\u00b2<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vulnerable populations, including children, suffer from higher rates of overweight and obesity. Programs like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dss.virginia.gov\/benefit\/snap.cgi\">SNAP<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/wic\/\">WIC<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/child-and-adult-care-food-program\/\">CACFP<\/a> have helped lower these rates in recent years. Yet, there is still work to be done. In 2016, Virginia WIC's obesity rate for preschoolers, 2-4 years of age, was 15.3 percent. This ranked Virginia as 12th in the United States for obesity rates.\u00b3\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified ECEs as a great setting to start learning healthy habits. These habits should address nutrition, infant feeding, physical activity, and screen time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Virginia Department of Health is committed to improving\u00a0 Healthy Eating and Physical Activity\u00a0 (HEPA) standards and quality in ECEs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Virginia\u2019s Breastfeeding Friendly Early Care Recognition Program<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The Early Care Breastfeeding Friendly Recognition Program was established with Child Care Aware-Virginia, Virginia Early Childhood Foundation, and Virginia Breastfeeding Coalition. We recognize early care sites in meeting five breastfeeding friendly standards.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">environmental<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family support<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infant feeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">professional development<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding policy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn more information on Child Care Aware-Virginia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/vachildcare.com\/child-care-providers\/virginia-breastfeeding-friendly-early-care-recognition\/\">site<\/a>. The program focuses on creating policy, systems, and environmental changes.
