Every year, millions of men, women, and children are trafficked worldwide \u2013 including right here in the United States. It can happen in any community and victims can be any age, race, gender, or nationality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to lure their victims and force them into labor or commercial sexual exploitation. They look for people who are susceptible for a variety of reasons, including psychological or emotional vulnerability, economic hardship, lack of a social safety net, natural disasters, or political instability. The trauma caused by the traffickers can be so great that many may not identify themselves as victims or ask for help, even in highly public settings. Moreover, Language barriers, fear of their traffickers, and\/or fear of law enforcement frequently keep victims from seeking help, making human trafficking a hidden crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Under the federal Trafficking Victims Protection Act 1, any child under 18 years of age, who is exploited through commercial sex where something of value \u2013 such as money, drugs or a place to stay \u2013 is given for sexual activity, is a victim of child sex trafficking. Child sex trafficking is a high priority issue at the National Center for Missing &amp; Exploited Children, especially because these children are often currently missing and actively being exploited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Even if a child believes that he or she chose to engage in his or her exploitation, it\u2019s important to remember that the child is a victim, and an adult or perpetrator is exploiting the child\u2019s vulnerabilities. Here are some common indicators to help recognize human trafficking.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Does the person appear disconnected from family, friends, community organizations, or houses of worship?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Has a child stopped attending school?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Has the person had a sudden or dramatic change in behavior?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Is a juvenile engaged in commercial sex acts?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Is the person disoriented or confused, or showing signs of mental or physical abuse?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Does the person have bruises in various stages of healing?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Is the person fearful, timid, or submissive?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Does the person show signs of having been denied food, water, sleep, or medical care?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Is the person often in the company of someone to whom he or she defers? Or someone who seems to be in control of the situation, e.g., where they go or who they talk to?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Does the person appear to be coached on what to say?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Is the person living in unsuitable conditions?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Does the person lack personal possessions and appear not to have a stable living situation?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Does the person have freedom of movement? Can the person freely leave where they live? Are there unreasonable security measures?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Not all indicators listed above are present in every human trafficking situation, and the presence or absence of any of the indicators is not necessarily proof of human trafficking. Forced labor is another type of human trafficking; both involve exploitation of people.
