Preventing injury and violence is important for everyone. An injury or a violent act can affect anyone at any stage in life. It can affect their emotional and physical health. An injury or violent act can also lead to long-term problems, disability, or death.<\/p>\n

Injuries and violence are preventable. The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) works to prevent injury and violence by:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Collecting and explaining injury- and violence-related data;<\/li>\n
  2. Identifying and addressing risk and protective factors;<\/li>\n
  3. Funding programs that work to prevent injury and violence;<\/li>\n
  4. Working with partners to expand prevention efforts;<\/li>\n
  5. Training the workforce to address injury and violence prevention; and<\/li>\n
  6. Providing Virginians with the knowledge to stay safe and healthy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

    Among Virginians who were hospitalized in Virginia in 2023, there were:<\/p>\n

    36,164 injury hospitalizations, a 3% increase from 2022.<\/p>\n

      \n
    • 52% were among females.<\/li>\n
    • 54% were aged 65 years and older.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      6,999 injury deaths, a 3% decrease from 2022.<\/p>\n

      • 70% were among males.<\/li>\n
