Ticks can spread diseases like Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and ehrlichiosis. Preventing tick bites, controlling ticks around your yard\u00a0and prompt removal of ticks are important ways to help prevent tick bites and the diseases that ticks may transmit.<\/p>\n<p>Avoiding tick bites is the best way to prevent tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease.\u00a0It is important to be extra vigilant from March through October when ticks are most active, and people spend more time outdoors. Blacklegged ticks, which potentially transmit Lyme disease, are also active on warm winter days when the temperature is greater than 40 \u00b0F.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minimize Direct Contact with Ticks<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid wooded and bushy areas with high grass and leaf litter.<\/li>\n<li>Walk in the center of trails.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain your yard and landscaping to reduce\/minimize tick habitat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Choose the Right Insect Repellent<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\u00a0recommended active ingredients:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/196\/2024\/07\/deet.png\" width=\"490\" height=\"248\" \/> DEET, picaridin, IR3535, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD),\u00a0or 2-undecanone.<\/li>\n<li>Apply repellent to your clothing as well as exposed\u00a0skin.<\/li>\n<li>Do not use repellent on babies younger than 2 months old.<\/li>\n<li>Do not use products containing OLE or PMD on children under 3 years old.<\/li>\n<li>Always follow product label instructions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Treat clothing, gear, and shoes with 0.5% permethrin,\u00a0but don\u2019t Do a Tick Check!<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bathe or shower as soon as possible\u00a0when you get back inside.<\/li>\n<li>Check your body with a mirror because ticks like to hide.<\/li>\n<li>Examine gear and pets for hitchhikers and stowaways.<\/li>\n<li>Wash clothing and dry with high heat.<\/li>\n<li>You found a tick? Don\u2019t panic!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Remove Ticks Safely<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin surface as possible.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/196\/2024\/07\/tick.png\" width=\"198\" height=\"352\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Pull upward with steady, even pressure.
